My Host Family

I realized that I've never posted a picture of my host family, so here they are. From left to right: Gonzalo (age 7), me, Evelyn (age 12), and Doña Fide (age 32). Note: Doña translates to something like "woman of the house".

Also please note that I am NOT actually a giant. Most Guatemalans are very short, which I've read is because of childhood malnutrition, although they are much shorter than malnourished Africans that I've seen so I think there must be some genetic factor also. But if Christiane Amanpour says it's because of malnutrition then I guess I won't argue (see here: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/slideshow/guatemala-devastating-effects-malnutrition-12387162) Also, just had to throw her name out there because she spoke at my college graduation!

  1. I like this picture with your family's Christmas tree. Is it a family member who took the picture and therefore is not shown? Or perhaps a neighbor was on hand to take it.

  2. We used the self-timer function on my camera, and set the camera on a table (and on top of a small guitar decoration on the table) in front of us.
